Best Fresh Perfumes in Oman

Sauvage is the fresh fragrance that refuses to fade, which is why half of Muscat wears it. Dior keeps the description short: a strong gust of Calabrian bergamot anchored by ambroxan, resinous elemi and woods. The Eau de Toilette is the lightest and most citrus-led version in the Sauvage range.

In a Muscat summer the bergamot burns off within the hour and what stays is the ambroxan, a salty, mineral, slightly sweet note that projects for most of a working day. That is the whole reason it works here. Other fresh fragrances give you thirty good minutes. Sauvage gives you six hours.

Use it carefully. Two sprays in a dry Muscat office are enough, and one is enough in the Khareef, where the humidity pushes it further than you expect.

For a fresh fragrance that still exists at 5pm after a day in Ruwi or Al Khuwair, this is the safest bet.

Acqua di Giò is thirty years old and still the benchmark for a marine fragrance. Armani lists bergamot, neroli and green tangerine on top, then marine notes with jasmine petal, rock rose, rosemary and persimmon, and a base of Indonesian patchouli and cedarwood.

It smells like the Qurum corniche at 7am. Salty, clean, a little green from the rosemary, with the patchouli keeping it from turning into pure soap. It is softer than Sauvage and much less likely to fill a room, which makes it the better choice for a shared office in Sohar or a family lunch.

Longevity is moderate. Expect a strong opening, a pleasant middle and a faint woody trace by mid afternoon.

If you want the sea without the shout, Acqua di Giò is still the one to buy.

Light Blue is lemon, apple and cedarwood, and Olivier Cresp has kept it that simple since it launched. It is the fragrance you smell in every mall in Muscat for a reason: it is bright, it is clean and it never offends.

The lemon is the star for the first half hour and it is a sharp Sicilian lemon, not a sweet one. The apple keeps it juicy and the cedarwood gives it a dry finish that stops it from smelling like a cleaning product. On a hot day it is one of the few fresh florals that does not turn sour.

It fades within a few hours, which is normal for this style. Keep the bottle at work and respray after lunch.

For a daily fresh scent that works with an abaya, a uniform or a weekend at Qantab beach, Light Blue is the easy answer.

Colonia is the oldest fragrance on this list and the most honest. It was made in 1916 to scent gentlemen's handkerchiefs, and the formula is a classic cologne: lemon, sweet orange and Calabrian bergamot on top, lavender, rose, verbena and rosemary in the heart, vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli underneath.

It smells like a freshly peeled orange in a wood-panelled room. There is nothing marine or synthetic about it. In Muscat it is a morning fragrance, worn generously, and it suits Omani understatement better than anything else here.

It is an eau de cologne, so it is light by design. Four or five sprays are normal, and the drydown is a soft herbal wood rather than a trail.

For a fresh scent that a father and daughter could share, or a gift for someone who dislikes modern perfume, Colonia is the right choice.

Most fresh perfumes for women are eau de toilettes and vanish by lunch. Acqua di Gioia is an eau de parfum, and it is the answer to that problem. Armani opens it with crushed mint and primofiore lemon, moves to a water jasmine heart and finishes on cedarwood with a brown sugar accord and labdanum.

The mint is the surprise. It gives the first hour a cold, green edge that no other fragrance here has, and it is exactly what you want walking out of a car in Seeb at noon. The jasmine is watery rather than heady, and the brown sugar in the base is a touch of warmth, not a dessert.

Because it is an eau de parfum it holds through the Khareef. On a damp Salalah evening it is still there at bedtime.

If Light Blue has never lasted long enough on you, this is the fresh fragrance to move up to.

Cool Water Woman is the fresh fragrance many people in Oman grew up smelling on an older sister, and it has not changed much. Davidoff lists watermelon and pineapple on top, a lily of the valley heart and a base of blackcurrant and what the brand calls sensual woods.

It is unapologetically aquatic. Watery, slightly sweet from the fruit, clean from the lily of the valley, with just enough wood in the base to keep it on skin. It is the closest thing on this list to the smell of a swimming pool in a good way.

It costs a fraction of the others and performs about the same as Light Blue. For a bottle to keep in a handbag for the school run or the gym, it is hard to beat.

For an easy, familiar aquatic that will not upset the budget, Cool Water Woman still does the job.
