Libre is one of the women's designer perfumes we gift-wrap most often in the UAE. Yves Saint Laurent built it on three ingredients it names directly: lavender from France, orange flower from Morocco and bourbon vanilla from Madagascar. The brand calls it the first floral lavender, and that lavender is what stops it from being just another sweet vanilla scent. It has a cool, slightly herbal edge over a warm base.

Coco Mademoiselle is the one bottle many UAE women buy and never replace with anything else. Chanel describes it as a bold, ambery woody fragrance. Orange brightens the scent, the heart is a clear accord of jasmine and May rose, and the base is patchouli and vetiver. That patchouli is doing the heavy lifting in Gulf weather. It is dry, earthy, and it lasts.

Good Girl arrived in 2016 in a bottle shaped like a stiletto, and the bottle alone sells it in our Dubai stores. The perfume deserves the attention, too. Carolina Herrera lists almond on top, jasmine sambac and tuberose in the heart, and tonka bean and cocoa in the base, and calls it an ambery floral. The Carolina Herrera site states that an Eau de Parfum of this strength lasts five to ten hours.

This is an evening perfume in the UAE. Tuberose and cocoa are rich, and at midday in August, they can feel heavy. From sunset onwards, and in the cooler months, it is one of the best statement scents in the designer category. It is a favourite for engagement parties and wedding receptions in Dubai and Sharjah, where the jasmine reads as festive and elegant.

One spray on each wrist and one at the collarbone is enough. It projects, and it will still be on your abaya the next morning.

La Vie Est Belle is the perfume most often bought for millennial mothers in our UAE stores, and for good reason. Lancôme describes a floral gourmand bouquet built on iris pallida, earthy patchouli sourced in Bali and a warm vanilla with spun sugar. Two of France's best-known perfumers, Anne Flipo and Dominique Ropion, created it, and the crystal smile bottle is instantly recognised at any gifting counter.

It is sweet, and sweet perfumes are loved in the Gulf. But worn at noon in Deira, it can turn sugary. Worn in the evening, or in the winter months, or indoors under air conditioning, the iris and patchouli keep the sugar in line, and it becomes soft and comforting. It is the scent of family dinners and Eid mornings for a lot of households in the UAE.

Paradoxe is the newest name on this list, and the one most UAE women under thirty ask for by name. The house calls it floral ambery and credits three perfumers: Nadège Le Garlantezec, Shyamala Maisondieu and Antoine Maisondieu.

It is the most office-friendly women's scent here. The neroli and the musk keep it clean in the heat, and it never turns syrupy the way heavier scents can in a Dubai summer. It sits close to the skin in air conditioning, which is what most people want at work, then opens up a little on an evening walk along the Corniche.
