The house's own description adds rosewood, sandalwood and vetiver, and calls the result dark, earthy and smoky. In practice, it is smoother than any of those words suggest. The oud is polished, not raw.

Oud for Greatness is the most potent perfume on this page, and the one most Saudi men in their twenties and thirties purchase. Initio lists oud, agarwood oil, lavender, saffron, patchouli, musk and nutmeg, files it under woody, amber and floral ambery, and describes it as oud treated with majesty and raw intensity, veiled with patchouli and musk. The saffron and lavender give it a cool, almost metallic opening before the oud takes over.

Its strong projection makes this a night perfume, made for the winter social season, for large gatherings and for anyone who wants to be asked what they are wearing. In Riyadh's dry air, it lasts well into the next day. In Jeddah it is best after dark, when the humidity drops a little.

Men who find Tom Ford Oud Wood too soft usually land here. It is part of Initio's Black Gold Project collection and made in France.

It is the bottle to reach for on the first cold weekend of the year, when the terraces open again and the evenings run late.

Oud Satin Mood is the softest oud on this list and one of the ouds most often bought for women in our Saudi stores. Maison Francis Kurkdjian lists violet, oud, Damascena rose, a vanilla amber accord and benzoin, files it under floral, ambery and woody, and describes it as a free interpretation of oud wood with a shimmering facet. The violet and vanilla wrap the oud until it feels like a soft fabric rather than stiff wood, which is where the name comes from.

It is sweet and rich, so it belongs to evenings and to the cooler half of the year. It sits beautifully under a abaya and lingers on the fabric for days. But it can turn sugary by midday, so keep it for after sunset.

Men wear it too, particularly those who like a rose and oud but find Dior Oud Ispahan too out there. It is the most romantic oud we sell.

For an anniversary or an Eid gift for a wife or a mother who already owns everything, this is the one that surprises.

Royal Oud is the oud for people who think they do not like oud. Creed publishes a full pyramid: grapefruit and cardamom on top, angelica and geranium in the heart, and oud, an incense accord, benzoin and cedarwood in the base. The key ingredients Guerlain calls out are oud and a powerful leather, with rose in the description, and the house states the formula uses more than ninety percent natural-origin ingredients. It now sits in the Absolus Allegoria collection. There is no pyramid published, and none is needed. It smells like oud, leather and rose, in that order.

This is the pick for someone who already loves traditional Saudi oud but would like to own a solid option from a French house. The leather gives it a dry, slightly smoky edge, and it sits well next to bakhoor without fighting it. It is a winter and evening perfume in Riyadh and Dammam, and a strictly after-dark perfume in Jeddah.

Rose Oud is Kilian's answer to the Gulf's favourite pairing, composed by Calice Becker. The house lists rose, cypriol, cedarwood and cinnamon, and its description adds saffron, a lychee accord, an oud accord and leather. Kilian describes it as a burning blend of roses, with Bulgarian rose oil opening on a spark of saffron and cinnamon while rose absolute spreads through the base. The oud here is an accord that supports the rose.

It is a celebration perfume made for Eid mornings and wedding parties. The cinnamon and saffron make it feel festive, and the rose keeps it wearable for both men and women. It is dense and it sits closer to the skin than Initio or Montale.

Black Aoud is Montale's emblematic fragrance, and it is the heaviest oud on this page. Oud for Glory is the Arabic-house pick on this list, and one of the most popular ouds across our Saudi stores. Lattafa launched it in 2020 and describes it as an amber woody fragrance for women and men. The brand's own page lists oud wood and patchouli at the centre of the scent, and those two are what you get: a sweet, resinous oud with a dark patchouli underneath. The bottle is heavy glass and looks the part on a shelf.

It is the daily oud for a lot of Saudi men, worn to work, to Friday prayers and for when running errands. It projects well in Riyadh's dry air and lasts through a working day. In Jeddah, it is best in the evening, when the humidity eases, and the sweetness settles.
