Shalimar is inherited property in many Saudi families. Mothers pass it to daughters. Grandmothers wore it before there were malls in the Kingdom. It crossed the hundred-year mark in 2025, and it still earns its place on any serious list of luxury women's perfumes.
The history is worth knowing. Jacques Guerlain composed the formula in 1921 and launched it in 1925 at the Paris Decorative Arts Exhibition, inspired by the love story of Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, the same couple the Taj Mahal honors, and by the Shalimar Gardens of Lahore where they walked. The name means "temple of love" in Sanskrit. The blue fan-topped bottle, designed by Raymond Guerlain to echo the garden fountains, won first prize at that same 1925 exhibition. Guerlain calls it the first pure amber fragrance, the ancestor of every "oriental" perfume sold today. That is real perfume history, not marketing copy.

My mother has worn this since before I was born, and for years I filed it under "perfume for older ladies." Then I tried the EDP on my own skin one Eid morning and understood everything. Chanel No 5 is not a perfume you wear. It is a perfume you commit to.
